FIRST DAY OF WINTER - December 21st
Kansas City receives an average of 20 inches of snowfall each year. A snow-filled scene is beautiful to look
at in photographs or out the window from the warmth of indoors. However, when it comes to snow and ice removal,
I'm sure we'd all agree that we have much better things we'd like to be doing. Here are a few helpful hints to
prepare and handle snow and ice episodes. Have a safe and healthy winter season from all of us at Landworks!
SNOW & ICE REMOVAL TIPS
Snow Shoveling
Remember - heavy, wet snow can put a strenuous strain on your body, especially your back.
Keep these simple steps in mind prior to tackling the snow.
- stretch your muscles before heading outside
- dress warmly & cover your mouth in extreme cold
- take frequent breaks
- avoid overexertion and stop if you feel any pain
- drink plenty of fluids
|
- shovel light loads of snow
- bend your knees

Snow Blower
If you use a snow blower, prior to the snow season perform a maintenance check on your snow blowing machine
to make sure it's ready and in good condition. Always be aware of stray objects or rocks that may cause damage
to your snow blower/property or cause personal injury. Point chute away from your house, vehicle or other property.
Ice Removal
Dealing with ice is a challenge. As soon as snow or freezing rain begins to fall, spread a melting agent (de-icer /
anti-icing chemical) on driveways and walkways. To avoid skin irritation, wear gloves to spread granules liberally
on drive and walkways. Note: Use caution with chemicals used for ice removal. Some products may chemically attack
concrete or harm vegetation. Use in strict accordance to manufacturer's guidelines.
- de-icer products: applied on existing snow or ice, spread this reactive application of ice-control chemical to drive or walkway surfaces to melt existing snow and ice.
- anti-icer products: applied before snow or ice begins to form, spread this proactive application of melting chemical to drive or walkway surfaces before a storm, as it helps prevent snow and ice from bonding to the pavement.
To assist the melting process of hard to remove patches of ice, crack ice with an ice chisel or other heavy duty
tool to expose the surface to the air.
